  • Well Now, Look Who’s Got Some New Software

Posted on October 24th, 2005 Brian No comments

Right. So it’s after 3:00, and I’ve spent all afternoon and evening migrating my old site from Geeklog to Drupal.

But! I’ve got me some new blog software. And more than that – it’s software that can run my whole site, and not suck. Yeah, the total lack of any posts for the last several months has been directly related to the fact that I hated Geeklog with a passion. Sorry about that.

I’ve done some crazy mod_rewrite magic, so the important permalinks from before will redirect to their new homes. For example, the ever-popular VMDB_E_LAUNCH_PEER_FAILED post goes to its new home. Also, the old RSS feed transparently returns the new one.

And that’s all I’ve got for now. My wife is sure to be angry in the morning about distrubing her when I crawl into bed this late, but such is life. Cuz I got me some new blog software!

Ok. Now I’m going to go pass out.

  • Prepare to be Boarded!

Avast! It be Talk Like A Pirate Day, ye scurvy land lubbers! Ye be keel hauled lest ye be talkin’ like a pirate for the rest o’ the day. Y’arr!!! So shiver me timbers, raise yer mug o’ glog, and swallow it down, lest we send ye to Davy Jones’ locker, ya filthy bilge rat!

  • ArdCam – Now With 37% More Salt!!

Posted on August 1st, 2004 Brian No comments

For those crazy ArdCam watchers out there, you’ll be happy to know I have just moved the camera off of my laptop and on to Samus. So why should this make you happy? Well, Samus is my Linux server running this site, and it is always on. So that means that the camera’s operational status is no longer tied directly to whether or not I plug it in or turn on the driver software. It will be snapping pictures 24/7 every 10 seconds. Plus it puts a cool little watermark on the picture.

The only downside is that the software sometimes makes the image look awful and washed-out. I’ll be mucking with the settings to see if I can improve that, but don’t hold your breath. If you get a washed-out image, and you absolutely need your Brian picture, then just wait a few seconds and refresh. It usually corrects itself after a few snapshots.

  • Comment Spammed

Posted on June 13th, 2004 Brian No comments

So I was comment-spammed. And that sucks. At least they could have comment-spammed me for something stupid like a penis-enlargement pill or an URGENT INVESTOR BULLETIN or something. No, they couldn’t do that. I had to get comment-spammed for free rape pictures.

Fortunately, the fix was pretty easy.

    from gl_comments
    where comment like '%rape%';
Deleted rows: 97 (Query took 0.0074 sec)

I have taken some solace that I destroyed their links in a mere 0.0074 seconds. And I have disabled anonymous comments for now, but since external users cannot register accounts, this effectively eliminates comments on my blog for now. Sorry. If you would really like to comment, please email me and I will set up an account for you.

  • More Exposure

As if dumping my thoughts onto the web wasn’t enough, I have set up a web cam. Check it out to see my mug and what WinAMP is playing.

Incidentally, much to my surprise, I like the new WinAMP 5. And not just because Nullsoft is going with a Fibonacci version numbering scheme.

  • RSS Change

Posted on December 10th, 2003 Brian No comments

I’ve disabled story text in The Burrow’s RSS feed. It is currently broken in that it doesn’t dump any HTML into the feed, thus making it look utterly stupid in any readers. So for now, you’ll have to hit my site.

I know, I know….I hate sites that do that, too. But it’s just the way it’s gonna have to be for now.

  • Back Online Again

Posted on December 10th, 2003 Brian No comments

Holy crap it’s been a long time since I posted anything. Maybe that would be because I just got my DSL back up and running a week or two ago. I rebuilt while it was down, also, and I hadn’t gotten the blog fully functional yet. In any case, I’m back live again, and I’ll be posting again. w00t! It feels good to be back.

    Thanks, Steve for missing me.

  • Going Down

Posted on October 29th, 2003 Brian No comments

Friday morning,, which includes this blog, will be down for several days. I am moving to the Right Coast, and I have to drive the servers across the country. My sites will be inaccessible for several days, but rest assured that they will return (with a new IP address) once Speakeasy gets my SDSL line installed at the new apartment. Thanks for your patience, Radioland!

  • Michelangelo Never Had It So Good

Check out this story on Yahoo! News. It’s about a $2 million party thrown by the former chief executive of the Tyco corporation. The party included “an anatomically correct ice sculpture of Michelangelo’s ‘David‘ urinating vodka.”

There is definitely such a thing as too much money.

  • Up and Running!

Posted on October 10th, 2003 Brian No comments

I’ve finally gotten off my duff and getten some sort of server up and running. We’ll see how it suits my needs over the next few days. That means that The Dumping Ground is officially open for business!

The site is running on Geeklog, which was extremely simple to install and set up. However, it seems more targetted at a community site, which is not really what I’m looking for. If I can castrate it enough to be simple, I’ll stick with it. Here’s hoping!
