<description>“SAY YES TO ZONE METERS” CAMPAIGN LAUNCHES
IN WASHINGTON, D.C.
Washington, D.C. – March 20, 2008 -- To ensure predictable, honest and accessible taxi service for all Washington, D.C. residents, workers and tourists, an online petition called “SAY YES TO ZONE METERS” is being launched today so citizens can voice their support for Zone Meters by going to www.petitiononline.com/zoneyes/petition.html

“Passengers want meters installed in DC taxis and they’re telling us they want the meters to be based on the existing zone system,” said Solomon Tesfaye with the Coalition of Taxicab Drivers, Associations and Companies. “Passengers want accuracy, predictability, to be treated fairly and they want taxis readily available in all areas of the city.”

According to Mr. Tesfaye, zone meters using GPS technology will ensure the greatest accuracy. Riders would only be charged for the shortest distance between their pick up place and final destination, regardless of the distance driven or time sitting in traffic.

Many are critical of Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty’s proposal to mandate time and distance meters since fares are totally unpredictable, are more susceptible to over-charging and will likely unfairly victimize riders in the poorest outskirt neighborhoods through higher prices and less taxi availability.

“We believe that taxi passengers deserve the same certainty, clarity and predictability that subway and bus riders enjoy. This can only be achieved with zone meters,” said Mr. Solomon. An added benefit of the new Zone Meters will be printed receipts with each ride.

Citizens wishing to voice support for the installation of Zone Meters in all D.C. Taxicabs can add their name to the online petition:
www.petitiononline.com/zoneyes/petition.html

or send an email to:
dctc@dc.gov - D C Taxicab Commission

mayor@dc.gov - DC Mayor Adrian Fenty

The D.C. Professional Taxicab Drivers’ Association and the Coalition of Taxicab Drivers, Associations and Companies, together, are organizations made up of thousands of taxicab drivers who take riders throughout the area 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
